Cool tourism hot spot raises scientists' temperaturesAs a huge new cruise ship sets sail for Antarctica, environmentalists and scientists raise concerns about the impact on the region, writes Andrew Darby. IT HAS the largest casino afloat, four pools and a nightclub and next year the Golden Princess will be the first megaliner to sail to Antarctica, taking thousands with it. But some managers of Antarctica and environmentalists are alarmed by the 109,000-tonne ship's scheduled journey. They say this scale of demand for the cool new destination is beyond any capacity to deal with a crisis. As they enjoy the luxury of a modern cruising giant, perhaps from one of 710 staterooms with private balconies, Golden Princess passengers are scheduled to pass a list of favourite Antarctic Peninsula sights, including Elephant and Deception Islands and Argentina's Esperanza Station. read more. Floyd productive in comeback; Maine, Mets take down AstrosHOUSTON -- If he allowed himself the luxury of dreams, Cliff Floyd might have hit a couple Saturday night, with of course, the game-winner in the ninth. However, in his first game back from the disabled list, and with just under a month left in the season, Floyd's ambition is more understated. "I just want to salvage something out of an up-and-down year," said Floyd, who after a pause, added, "that has been mostly down." It might happen, and Floyd took a positive step by driving in two runs in Saturday night's 4-2 victory over the Houston Astros. The Mets did get a bit of a scare in the ninth when center fielder Carlos Beltran had to limp off the field after making a great catch. But initial reports said it was only a bruised knee. Floyd's sacrifice fly and a run-producing error on Houston second base man Craig Biggio in the fourth inning, and a run-scoring wild pitch in the sixth gave John Maine the support he needed in winning his fifth game. read more. Easing the way along Oak Tree RoadWoodbridge is planning a "visioning process" for Oak Tree Road that township officials hope will eliminate problems that have been escalating for years. "We want to look at where we are, where we've been and where we want to go as a community," said township Interim Mayor Joseph Vitale. The process is the first of several planned for various downtown areas in Woodbridge in coming months, including New Brunswick Avenue in Fords, the Keasby waterfront, Inman Avenue in Colonia and Main Street in Woodbridge, he said. Oak Tree Road, which extends through Iselin and Edison, frequently attracts hundreds of shoppers, mainly from the Asian Indian community. It has been the center of congestion for years because it was originally designated to be a main street in a small downtown, said township Business Administrator Bob Landolfi. read more. This page is gathered in a practiced configuration.
